Diseases of the salivary glands

Bacterial inflammation of the salivary glands

Diseases of the salivary glands can be divided into acute inflammation and chronic inflammation, as well as the occurrence of salivary stones. Acute inflammation is usually caused by bacteria and is most commonly found in the parotid gland. This appears as a painful swelling in front of the ear. Treatment includes the administration of antibiotics and plenty of fluids. Parotid gland inflammation can occur with mumps due to a virus (parotitis epidemica).

Other inflammations of the salivary glands

In the case of a slowly increasing swelling in the area of the parotid gland, the more common benign pleomorphic adenoma must be considered. It is characterized by the absence of symptoms. The treatment of choice is complete removal while preserving the facial nerve. In chronic salivary gland inflammation, the gland is destroyed in the long term and removal of the gland is often advisable.

Salivary stones

The occurrence of salivary stones is a common problem, mostly in the submandibular salivary gland. A feeling of tension and pressure during food intake is typical because the saliva produced cannot drain away. Depending on the size and location, the aim is to remove the stone while preserving the gland.
