Sinus lift

Bone augmentation in the upper jaw

Anyone who has already studied implantology in detail will have come across the term sinus lift. In our practice, the procedure is a proven treatment method that you can also benefit from before dental implant surgery.

In the following, we would like to explain how a sinus lift works and when it might be suitable for you.

It is a procedure that is often performed before implantation in the upper jaw to ensure the long-term stability of the dental implant. After tooth loss, there is often bone recession in the jaw. As a result, the implant is poorly retained in the jaw and cannot anchor itself sufficiently. The chances of success of such an implant would be low. However, to ensure that the implant can be inserted even after bone recession, the bone supply is increased surgically. The sinus lift thickens the floor of the maxillary sinus (maxillary sinus) by storing bone or bone replacement material in the upper jaw. This makes it possible to build up the jaw and thus provide the best conditions for the implant.

When is a sinus lift suitable for you?

  • You have suffered tooth loss and are interested in an implant
  • Your bone supply in the jaw is not sufficient for an implant
  • The tooth loss occurred some time ago

Bone augmentation not only provides optimal conditions for the implant, but also stimulates bone growth so that you can benefit from strong jawbone again in the future.

Various forms of treatment

There are different surgical options depending on the amount of bone in your jaw. A distinction is made here between the internal and external sinus lift. The internal sinus lift is particularly effective if only a small amount of bone is missing. This bone augmentation treatment is less complex, but can only be performed if there is a certain amount of remaining bone height.
If you suffer from a high level of bone loss in the jaw, you will be advised to undergo an external sinus lift. This is a more complex procedure. However, it offers you the best results even if there is little bone available. Whether a sinus lift makes sense for you and which type of treatment is suitable for you depends on your individual situation, and we will of course be happy to advise you personally about your options. A three-dimensional X-ray examination (DVT) can be used to determine directly where bone needs to be built up in your case and thus ensure optimal treatment.
